General Islamic Principle: Is Your New Year A Loss or A Gain?

By Lekan Yakub
Dear reader, before you answer this question, I ‘ll want you to reflect about this short write-up.
Last year passed by like a flash and the new year is here…whether it is
2016 C.E. or 1437A.H.
For some people, the beginning of the new year is marked by party and excitement.
And for some, it is a time for reflection and self accountability.
Instead of celebrating, they are worried and scared.
Their hearts tremble and their skins shiver.
Because they understand that each year that passes means a year LESS from their lifetime…..
Each year that passes by is bringing them closer to their death….making them much closer to that inevitable event when they will meet their Lord, when they will have to stand in front of Him and answer regarding all that they did.
They are aware that whatever year or time has passed will never come back.
And Prophet Muhammad (salAllaahu Alaiyhi
wa sallam) said: “On the Day of Resurrection the feet of the son of Adam (man) will not move till he is questioned about four things: how he spent his lifetime, how he spent his youth, from where he acquired his wealth and how he spent it, and what he did with his knowledge.” (Tirmidhi)
O! Muslims, let’s take account of ourselves and our deeds at the end of every year…every month…and at the end of every day.
We must be conscious of every second of our lives and spend it in what will benefit us in this world and afterlife.
Allaah says: “Therefore, race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden as wide as heaven and earth, prepared for those who believe in Allaah and His Messengers. Such is the Favor of Allaah; He
gives it to whom He will. Allaah is the Owner of great favor.”
(Surah Hadeed: 21)

Dear reader, take advantage of this year beacuse many are dead and you are stil living (Alhamdulillaah). Use your time wisely, and in the obedience of Allaah (according to the Qur’aan and Sunnah) and success will be yours in this world and hereafter in sha Allaah.
