THE ONE WHO WASTES

By: Umm Affan

It’s indeed doleful when a Muslim have varieties of food provided (all at a time) just to break his fast with the mindset of compensating his stomach for what it missed of foods and drinks during the day. Majority are culpable of this! Miqdam Ibn Ma’d narrated that the Prophet (SallaLlahu ‘Alayhi was-Salam) said: “There is no vessel which the son of Adam can fill that is more evil than his stomach, for it is enough for him to take a few bites in order to straighten his back…” [Sunan Ibn Majah]. Simply, what that act does is, it makes one wastes food as it shall eventually be thrown away. Shaykh Salih Al-Fawzan (RahmatuLlah ‘Alayhi) said: “It is not permissible to throw any food into dirty places or impure places such as washrooms, because that is a waste, mistreatment of the blessing and a lack of gratitude to Allah” [Fatawa Noor ‘Ala Al-Darb]. The foods should rather be shared with the poor and needy instead of wasting it. Indeed, this will indicates appreciating Allah’s Blessings.

Let the one who wastes food know that there are _ménages_ having nothing to eat. In fact, one of the noble messages of fasting is to make the _wabenzi_ recognize how the poor feels having nothing to eat due to poverty. We actually need to get this point clear-cut! Thence, wasting foods is an offence. Allah warns: “Eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allah) likes not _Al-Musriifun_ (those who waste by extravagance)” [Surah Al- Araf (7): 31]. I beseech Allah to grant us more understanding and make us not of the _Al-Musriifun_.
